Massey 44 Special oil presure?

I just overhauled a 44 Special engine. Today was the first day of running it and the oil pressure is 50#. Could be more because the gauge only goes to 50#. At idle it goes down to 45#. I can not find what the pressure should be normally. Is this a problem? If so how do I fix this. Engine runs fine otherwise.

That does seem high, but I had that much pressure on mine and it did not seem to pump it all on top. I would not worry about it, as long as it does not go higher when sped up.

Hi Scott, I no longer have a manual, but I know
that pressure is too high. As said most Cont.eng
pressures were in the twenties. Chuck

The reason the oil pressure was in the 20s was due to the original relief valve. The replacement have a stiffer spring and will run higher.

Gas usually run 15-20 PSI oil pressure. Diesels 40-50 PSI. Same pump, but different spring. When at the MF dealer years ago the boss liked to flip over the relief spring cup to raise the gas pump pressure.

Pressure regulating valves on 44's were set at 16 PSI, but one of mine that I purchased about 15 years ago runs 50
psi, engine does not seem to care.
