Clutch/ Gears Grinding

My Massey 3165 is grinding gears quite a bit. It is intermittent though. Sometimes it shifts fine, other times it grinds hard. It seems like the clutch isn't adjusted right. I fiddled a bit with the adjustment in the pedal linkage but am not sure how to the screws on the pressure plate. Is it something that can be done through the inspection window? or do I have to split it?
are there other reasons that would cause it to shift hard?
Any advice would be great!
Thanks

Hi,
Remove the inspection plate and using a flashlight with the engine stopped carry out a visual inspection first.
Check and look for;
Any pieces of clutch lining on the inspection plate or in the well behind the plate access.
With the pedal 'up' there should be an even gap between the release bearing face and each finger screw.
Have an assistant press the pedal. Check the amount of movement at each PTO adjuster screw as you prise the flywheel round.
Are you able to engage gear smoothly if you push the pedal into the second stage? If so then it may be adjustment of the PTO screws is all that is needed. The standard gap is 090". This can be. It is not an exact figure but all adjustments must be the same. Increasing the gap will bring the second stage in later.
Look for any evidence of oil contamination which would make the clutch lining 'sticky' and drag.

Let us know what you find.

Another thing that David did not mention ...is the fact that these
tractor will 'rasp' when selecting gear.....they are not syncromesh
gears. As long as the clutch is not binding, then it is probably not at
fault.....I have found over the years that you do not need to be
gentle when selecting gears in these tractors, that lets them grind
and chew gears, instead you need to dip the pedal....wait a bit and
then ram the gear home rather sharply.......! ....Sam

Some things I should add.
It is just a single stage clutch, with independent PTO
It doesn't grind bad shifting between gears, rather it grinds badly when coming out of N into 1 or R. from a standstill.
Also I recently had the tractor split apart and everything looked good in the clutch.
But it had this problem before I did the engine work that required me to split the tractor.
I guess i should have added all this in my original post!
Thanks for the replies so far.

I think you need to try another similar Massey, I think you will find
it to be the same???

So i haven't found anything out about this clutch issue yet, but I talked to a friend of mine who is a tractor mechanic and he suggested I try to check the screws on the fingers. I will try to remember to post the outcome...
Any advice on adjusting those fingers? Is it possible to do it through the inspection window?

Thanks

I am going to guess you don't have a manual- yet.
When your friend looks at the tractor, and you let him read the manual a few minutes, it will help him help you, and save his time. All the specs and methods of inspection and adjustments are in even the cheapest I&T paperbacks. Well worth the money in the long run...
