Massey Ferguson TO35 Point Melting

The nylon bumper on the contact gap keeps melting. Someone has switched from generator to standard alternator. Wondering what the problem is?

Possible 12 volt charging into a 6 volt system. I think the TO35 was a 6 volt system. If that is the case you will need to step the voltage down.

Some were 6V, positive ground, after 1955 they were 12V neg. ground (from the info I have). What year is the TO35 you have and how long ago was it converted to an alternator? If it was working fine and just started melting points, you have something else wrong. If it was a recent conversion you need to make sure everything is matching voltage wise.
More info would help.

You can get one from your local auto parts store like NAPA. On a 12 volt system you only need around 8 volts going to a distributor with points. Mine is a 12 volt system i found a resistor with a Ohm value of 1.82 and it took the 12 volts down to a tad over 9 volts to the distributor which is ok.(higher the Ohm value the more it will drop the voltage) The resistor will go inline to the wire that is connected to the plus side of the coil. Food for thought if you convert the distibutor to HEI (electronic pick-up means no points) you want need a resistor because the electronic pick-up can take the 12 volts. Hope this helped

if you are talking about the rubbing block on the ignition points, I had same problem, points gap kept closing up

I cleaned the dist cam and put just a tiny dab of grease on the lobes, problem solved

the friction was melting the plastic
