Oil pressure switch 65 diesel

Can someone explain to me the purpose of the oil
pressure switch on the back of the pressure gauge
on a 65 diesel? I'm not sure of its purpose. If
there was a solenoid on the injection pump that
kill the fuel if you lost pressure I would
understand. This is all mechanical so what's it
for? Tim

Probably turns on power to something when it gets 5PSI of oil pressure. Can't remember just what but it is common.

It turns on the entire electrical system. The original key switch doesn't have an "on" position to serve that purpose.
