Massey 231 Ballast weight

Neighbor wants me to build him a ballast weight for his massey 231. When his FIL picks up a round bale, 1000#, his rear wheels come up. Rear tires have ballast.

A 55 gallon drum full of concrete will be close to the 1000#, However, we would have to position the drum as far back of the rear wheels as the 1000# hay is in front of the front wheels which may not be possible.

My concern is how much can the 3 pt lift?

Secondly, I would like to see pics of your ballast?

Don't care what it looks like, neighbor just wants it to work. I want to keep it simple.

Looking for a good idea. I can weld, have cement mixer.

I used a 55 gal drum of cement mounted on an L shaped bracket with the 3PH attachment at the front of the bracket. That put the weight as far back as possible without making an extension. It was for my Kubota but should work on any tractor.

I have something like you described in my head. So you think 55 gallons of concrete will work?

Well it should weigh 1000 to 1100 # depending on the mix but if you are lifting 1000 on the front then 1000 on the back should cancel it out. Your pivot point is the front wheels. I always had good traction on my tractor with 1000 on the 3PH.

How heavy are the bales he makes? I had no problems with the 550 pounders I made, my neighbor had a time trying to lift the 1000 pounders they made. He had a stable of beefy farmall diesels, and only the biggest could lift them onto a wagon. Once ya get the front wheels to stay on the ground, the next weakest link is the hydraulics. Yeah, around here a 55 gallon drum with top and bottom links, full of concrete, rocks or scrap iron is common. That gotta weigh something.. and is easy on and off.
