MF 245 Clutch question

MF 245 with Perkins, not sure of year, think 1969-ish... so i had some issues with this thing and had a post in the past asking how to adjust the PTO clutch. i tried it, still not working right. i am about ready to order a whole new clutch kit. it's just not making sense to me though. I have no slipping in the drive clutch. however i have a hard time getting it in gear or changing gears without grinding. also i can't get the PTO to release. it just seams to me like more of a slop or something wore out and not getting enough throw out... i adjusted the pedal to the point of setting it too tight where if i step on it , that is all there is and if i push hard enough the clamp on the pedal slips... never done a tractor clutch. done them in lots of other things, but it just don't make sense to me and don't want to spend 300 buck if not needed. i will also add that the bottom inspection cover was missing apparently since i bought this machine about 5 years ago. guess i just never got down under there to notice. there was a bunch of dirt in there as you can imagine. so maybe that helped with wearing something out in there?

...and anyone know where i can get a inspection cover before i waste a day making one?

Hello,
Have you adjusted the PTO adjusting screws to an approximate claearance of 090"? The figure does not have to be exact but all adjustments must be the same. Depending on how much wear there is in the linkage it may be necessary to reduce this figure slightly.

If you have carried out the adjustment correctly have an assistant operate the clutch pedal fully whilst using a flashlight you observe the operation. With the engine stopped, turn the flywheel until you see an adjuster. When operated you should see the PTO pressure plate withdraw 1/16-3/32" (1.5-2mm). Check the next and third one for a similar amount of movement.
If the pressure plate is withdrawing a satisfactory amount you may either have rust or oil contamination on the surface of the PTO plate. Is there any evidence of oil dampness (engine or transmission) around the clutch unit?
When the pedal is fully raised check the relative positions of the release fingers to the face of the release bearing. If they are not even it is possible that the lining on one side of the plate has broken and become sandwiched. Let us know what you find.

Check all the PTO release bolts as Dave mentioned. If the PTO still drags there is a chance the PTO pressure plate is cracked. I had a 275 do that, both drive plates were good, had the release screws set to .060 and it still would drag BAD. Found the cracked plate after the assembly was apart on the bench, could not be seen while assembly was in the tractor. Was the first plate I had ever had to replace, never saw it happen at the dealer I worked for either.

I use .040 to .045 on those adjustments there with great success it not that .090 wont work there so much wear in linkage that reducing the air gap seems to do the trick ,,,
