175 Transmission noise

So I tore into the 175 to see where the clunk was. So far I've come up with this: there seems to be a lot of play in between the two input shafts, and also a lot of wear in the splines on the clutch. I can't locate my manual, a neighbor gave me one about two years ago (predicting the future maybe). Was wondering if perhaps one of you guys might be able to post a view if what's in the transmission for bearings and such. It has IPTO and hydraulics. I'm assuming my 65 book is similar but it is a little vague. Thanks in advance!

Did you check the teeth on the drive gear of the outer input shaft and the gear it mates with on the lower shaft? I had a 165 with IPTO that wore out the splines twice and broke a tooth off from both of those gears once.

Here is a picture of my 150 with IPTO. Can't help on bearing or seal numbers, haven't had a problem.

Yep Bob, you nailed it. Found it's missing a tooth. Any ideas on what would cause that? Any ideas on a parts source for just the gears? I've got a spare 65 transmission but I'd hate to tear it apart to see if the gear is the same. Thanks again. You gotta love this forum!

It was 1976 when I did that job, so the memory is a little hazy. I think the input shaft and drive gear are one piece. The driven gear does come off the shaft, but the shaft comes out from the back of the tranny. Does the input shaft have 10 or 25 spines where it goes into the clutch cover? The 65 and early 1XX would have 10. The later models have 25.

Good news is I found my book. It mentioned the parts came out the back, so splitting it at the tranny is next on the agenda. I've got an Abilene machine parts book and it lists PTO gear as 53 tooth, 15 splines the same for both the 65 and the 175 but it makes no mention of IPTO. So I guess I'll get going until I have the gears out and see what is what!

Splines are shot on the pressure plate as well. Funny a new one for this 175 and the 180 are a $100 apart, with the 180 being a two stage with a lot more moving parts. I guess it comes down to how many they make. I'm going to tear into it in the AM. I just got home from a drywall job and I'm not feeling it!

Would it be an option to put the complete 65 tranny in the 175, providing you could find a clutch cover with a hub that matches the 65 input shaft?
