I have a 1949 that I am changing gear oil in. I removed the plate over rear end, by removing seat bracket and shock and all the bolts around edge of plate. The gears look good and no play. Can I dump all 13 gallons of gear oil in through this opening rather than using the small awkward fill plug by gear shift under gas tank? For replacing the plate, can I use an RTV material as seal instead of making a gasket?

Yes you can.

The filler is PIA.

It would be good to flush it out first. I took a drill pump with diesel and hosed mine out. This will get the rust and gunk out.
