MF 65 Hydraulic Problem

I'm fixing to work on the 3 point lift of my 1958 MF 65. Dad was blading snow and one tire started to spin, then caught traction. When it caught he heard a something pop. The result was the 3 point hitch will not operate in either direction. When I drive the tractor I can hear a clinking sound from under the seat area. The lift arms pulse up and down slightly in conjunction with the clinking, as if riding over gear teeth. If I physically hold up on the lift arms while he drives the tractor, the clinking stops. I haven't had this tractor long and don't know much about it. I was wondering if the hydraulic repair video on this sight would help me, even though it is based off of the MF 35. Through reading I think it may have the same pump as the MF 35. I want to do the work myself but I'm gonna need some advice. BTW didn't take long to decide, I love this tractor. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

the hydraulic pump is driven by a splined coupling on the transmission shaft, held in place by a cotter pin that goes through the center. Sometimes that pin breaks, and the spline slips, disconnecting the pump. That sounds like what happened to you.

You can check by draining out a little transmission oil, and removing the side cover. Reach your hand in till you feel the pump shaft and feel along it to see if the splined collar is in place. Often, you can fix it without removing the top cover.

The pump is not driven off the transmission shaft, it's driven off the pto shaft if the cotter pin has broken on that shaft your pto will no spin so I would see if that spins first if it doesn't then your gonna have to remove the lift cover to access that pin. If it does spin then it could have something to do with your lift pump?

Thanks for all the help and responses. I finally had time to pull my tractor in the garage and have a look. When I pulled the top cover the problem wasn't hard to find. The roll pin had broken that holds the lift piston rod into the lift ram. The gear jumping motion of the lift arms was due to the end of the lift piston rod riding across the ring gear. Now I have a bigger problem. It broke about a third of the back off of 7 of the teeth on the ring gear. Looks like I'll be replacing a ring and pinion. Haven't done this before either, any advice? Gonna check my service manual when I get home from work to see if it says anything about the procedure. Easier to take to a shop but I want to do the work myself. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks again.
