massey 35 with multi power tranny

The book calls for 8 gallons of 80w Gl in tranny. What kind of trouble will a person get in to if they used a cheap brand of hydraulic fluid sold at rural king or TSC?

I think the hydraulic system will work fine, back in the day they did not have as many oil options as we have today.

It is my understanding the bronze / brass bushings in the transmission is what you are trying to protect.

Many use regular 10w40 motor oil, should be non-detergent, but do not think you are going to fine that oil on this side of the pond. The non detergent oil like gl-1 let's the dirt particles fall to the bottom of the sump, keeping the oil cleaner, where detergent oil keeps the dirt particles suspended in the oil too be cleaned by the oil filter. Since the older tractors did not have an hydraulic/transmission oil filter they use non detergent gl-1 oil.

I bought gl-1 oil for my old 1957 TO35 at NAPA for $16 per gal.
 
Given the multi power, I would not deviate from recommended oil and would change it regularly.

The multi-power clutch is same type as in car/trucks automatic transmissions. Genuine MF Permatran oil MUST be used in tractors with multi-power or/and IPTO.

80W was used in the pre Multi-Power tractors. It is NOT the proper oil for a tractor with Mukti-Power. You want universal transmission and hydraulic oil.
 
Add that nice thick 80W oil and give it a few degrees of frost to make it even thicker and then start the tractor up and give that expensive little multi-power pump a good starving when the oil cannot get through the strainer????????? I think 15W30 super universal is starting to look very useful and cheap at any money!. Even back in the day before these modern oils MF recommended 40 wt oil in the UK....And we don't get the hard frosts!........Sam
