Developed a clattering in the front of the engine last year and have been afraid to use the Ferguson 40. Have to do repairs outside when weather permits due to no barn or garage.
Replaced governor 2 years ago as old one desenigrated. Ran normal for one year, then started making a racket.
Took to mechanic last fall and replaced all rod and main bearings. He said it sounded like tappets.
Pulled the head cleaned all carbon off, everything looks fine.
Have 24lbs oil pressure.Had the timing cover off 3 times last year but couldn't find anything loose or broken.
Any ideas before I start tearing apart piece by peice. Could an oil pump cause a clattering noise. When I take off the oil fill cap you can really hear the clattering . Thanks for the help

Very possibly it is the key and keyway on the camshaft to cam gear. Thats what I found on one
that I overhauled. It ran good but had a sharp rattling sound.

I was having the same problem with my 1957, TO35.

After checking with a few mechanics and asking what could cause such a noise..

I had an old farmer friend come over and look at the tractor. He ask me to start it up and he listened for a while. Then I turned it off an he started going over the tractor with his hand, just like a doctor.

Then he reached down and moved the crankshaft pulley, he said, it feels a little loose and is that large bolt suppose to be out that far?

That was it, the front crankshaft pulley attachment bolt had worked loose and that was making the noise.

We put lock tight on the threads and he helped me tighten up the bolt, noise gone.

Sometimes you just cannot see the forest for the trees.

Hope your noise is this easy to fix!!!

Like MW suggests, verify that the crankshaft pulley is tightly mounted.

If it is not, constant motion will eventually wear the keyway oversized.

Thanks for the replies. I've had the front end apart three times trying to find the problem. Good thought maxwell99 but I have torqued the pulley bolt to 80 ft lbs and have only started the engine to see if the noise was gone. It wasn't!
I have other questions so please bear with me. I have the dealer service manual for a MF 50. The Ferguson 40 and MF50 are the same tractor with the Z134 motor but I can't find anywhere what the torque should be on the crankshaft pulley bolt. does anyone know?
Next, how much oil should be comming out of the valve rocker arm tube? I only have a spurt comming from the center rocker arm hold down bracket.
