TO 20 gas tank valve

My TO 20 has a fuel shut off with a glass bowl on the bottom. If I remove it I see a stand pipe about 1 1/2 inch above the top where it screws into the tank. What is the purpose of the stand pipe? Thanks Stan

to keep rust and sediment in the tank.

The original ones have two stand pipes. The upper one handles fuels flow when the valve is opened two turns. If you ran out of fuel, you opened the valve all the way and you had about a gallon of reserve fuel to get you back to the fuel tank for a refill. Both standpipes were abour the absolute tank bottom.

What Jerry said, motor cycles had them as a reserve also.
