MF250 3 Point Hitch Drops when Engine RPM Raised

Hi there,

We have a MF250 tractor with 3 point problems. When the tractor is running at idle, the 3 point hitch works as designed. When I raise the engine RPM, the 3 point hit will slowly start to drop from raised position until it drags on the ground.

Where should we start?

Thanks!
Nate

Look under the transmission, just in front of the drawbar mounting
point, for a plate held on with 3 little bolts. That is the access to the
hydraulic filter. Remove the plate, after draining the oil! and
unscrew the filter. It is washable, but it is not expensive to replace.
Fill up with new 15W30 oil and try it again. What is happening is
with the filter partially clogged the flow is enough when ticking over
but when you rev the tractor and speed up the pump you get oil
cavitation, thus the pump is starving!........Let us know if that
helps......Sam

Hi & thanks for the response. I had suspected some kind of pump cavitation due to dirty hydraulic filter, or possibly air leak on the suction side of the pump. I'll start here. Thanks!

What Sam says is exactly right. We had a 250 doing the same thing. I tried washing out the metal filter and it looked clean, but it was not clean enough! Buy a new filter(strainer) the are not expensive, and draining the new oil back out of it is a pain.

Well that filter sure didn't look overly dirty, but we replaced it anyway. Along with the filter, went in new o-rings. So far, the 3 point hitch seems to be working as designed.

We also resealed the steering valve, gave the tractor a thorough cleaning, repainted the sheet metal, fixed a small diesel leak, and replaced the decals on the hood.

Here are a couple before/afters....

You really have it looking good. Do you pull a gang mower or other turf equipment with it? How many hours does it have in service?

Thank you! My mechanics are real good at what they do =).

This is owned by a customer of ours, and is currently for sale. He mostly used it to pull a weed sprayer in a high density planted almond orchard here in CA. The orchard floor is minimal to zero tillage, and therefore we use a low profile turf tire for minimal ground compaction and rutting.

Yep, time to get her sold! =)
