MF 165 knocking noise

We have a 165 that makes a knocking noise and gets faster as you rev engine up. Noticed it when dad kicked in pto on bush hog one day it never made that noise before wonder if a tooth in pto or something else possibly. Noise sounds like it is coming from clutch area or right below you. Any ideas would be appreciated thanks

Has the PTO driveline ever had a sudden shock load on it? The PTO driven gear at the trans front can loose teeth, had one make that noise and found that gear was damaged on a 165 diesel about 10 years ago.

I don't know if he kicked in too fast at high rpm but it happened after he turned pto on. Also does noise when pto not engaged.

Pump alignment? That will surely cause a knock. The PTO shaft passes through the pump and a shock could have knocked it out of line.

Does it still knock when you push the clutch pedal all the way down to disengage the PTO clutch? If the knocking stops, its probably your hydraulic pump.

Hi all!
Joe, I'm not far away.....at least on the computer.
There are several possibilities here. From the question the most likely would appear to be one or both pump locating dowels broken. These dowels are on the end of the small diamond shaped plates which are attached to the front lower sides of the transmission centre casing.
A sudden loading on the pump as might be achieved by engaging a heavy pto-driven implement could be enough to shear one or both dowels especially if there is wear present in them. Alternatively the front upper corners of the front pump plate which the dowels locate in can break away. The result is that the pump will then 'rattle' inside the casing. The three-point and PTO will work satisfactorily until the excess movement either wears the stackpipe away or causes the O rings to wear and leak oil.

It should be investigated immediately by draining the oil from the transmission and removing the RH side cover. If the pump is loose then it will be possible to rotate the pump body within the casing slightly.

A less likely possibility is wear in the PTO plate flywheel in the clutch unit. This normally reduces as the engine speed increases and would not happen instantly.
