Shuttle shift problems MF 40

MF40 Industrial with left hand forward/reverse
lever. 3cyl Perkins gas. Have difficulty shifting
from F to R and back again. Gears don't seem to be
sliding together properly. Often jumps into
"neutral". This results in having to "grind" back
into gear.
Can this problem be diagnosed with out splitting
tractor apart? Any ideas on this? Thanks

I've always found those to be sloppy. Currently we have one on a 30B and it's imperative to be completely stopped and push the clutch down far enough to completely disengage the tranny gears and firmly push -- or pull, the lever through its' entire stroke. Usually it's the last 10% where one can feel that it's completely engaging. Otherwise, we have the same problem as you. It's not something you can rush. Just not the same instant, easy shift like a hydraulic reverser.

Hi
sounds like the 2500 forklift I did the motor on last winter. that was the same jumping out of gear.
the way the selector works is it has 2 spring loaded pegs in, to hold it in forward or reverse. this one had a lot of wear and the pegs wouldn't hold it in gear. I changed the gearbox input shaft seal while the motor was out. when pulling the housing, a pile of parts fell in the trans, Had to take the top off, find 30 odd little parts.
Then try figuring out putting it all back without removing half the transmission components.
I got it figured, and all back in after a day.
Not a simple 10 minute fix to do it right. so could be expensive if you can't do it your self.
I never want to see another with what happened with this one changing the seal. Guys didn't want to spend the extra on shift parts and still use it like it was.
Regards Robert
