444 oil seal

Leaking seal on the left brake, I have removed everything down to the housing with the seal that bolts to the trans. My question is can I remove this housing to replace the seal or do I have to replace it on the tractor ? Also dose anyone have a number for this seal ? Thanks

The # for that seal is CR 455009 or NAPA 27470, that is if you have drum brakes, That casting can be removed, it has shims behind it. That # is for a 44, but I have 444's and I'm positive they take the same seal.

The #455009 seal can be purchased from Summit Racing for around $6.00. NAPA and other places as high as $20.00. You do not have to remove casting to remove seal. Dig it out with a screw driver or chisel or a slide hammer with a screw on end works great. Any way you chose to replace, put duct tape around shaft from transmission case out
(don"t tape area where seal sets) and lube with oil and it will slide on without damaging new seal. GOOD LUCK!! Ron

I have the disk brakes, would they take the same no. ? I just though that if I could take the casting out it would be a lot easer get the seal in, what seals the casting to the trans. case ? ALSO as long as I'm here... anyone know of someone in Mich or Ohio who may have a 444 parted out ? looking for a couple of things ( not grill or shrouding under seat ) Thanks for the info.

I don't know that #, kessel's massey parts and sales has the seals sold separately or as a set, see his web site, a good guy to do business with.

If you decide to remove the bearing race housing to replace the seal, you may want to remove the back cover on top and support the differential before you loosen the housing. I've used a piece of flat stock across the housing and looped wire under both sides of the differential. I then fasten the wire to the flat stock to hold everything in place. This prevents the differential from sagging and ruining the seal on the opposite side. It may not be as much of an issue with your 444 due to the hand clutch holding things in place, but if you ruin the right one the entire hand clutch assembly must be removed to replace the seal. Good luck
