PTO shaft seal...

OK a question... the seal I bought to replace the old one has a raised lip one one side and the other side is flat. which side faces out (that you can see when the shaft is in the tractor)

help..

Open side/lip side/garter spring side is the OIL side and faces IN.

So, to answer your question, FLAT side faces OUT. (Air side.)

You still have the old one in, don't you? Look at how it goes in,
before you take it out. I was taught lip to oil side, but some seals
have 2 lips. That's when inspection, on site, acting on experience,
takes precedence.

The one that came out had an open back. That's the only kind I've ever seen... and used. This one does not have an open side so I was hoping someone had used one like the one in the link and could give me a little quick help. ( my eyesight isn't that good)
Thanks for your help Dave

If I remember right the the raised side is supposed to face outward. It has been a while. The outer lip is just to keep dust and dirt out.

The new seal in this pic has the outer face of the seal facing
upwards....Disregard the rest of the picture as this was the type of
'farmer fix' I have to repair quite often.....off the shelf and incorrect
seals and a good dose of instant gasket!

Well, that clears that up....as I have said, a picture is worth a thousand words. Thanks all for the help.
