MH 30 gearing?

I have a Massey Harris 30 has 13.6x38 tires on it. Only thing
I use it for is antique tractor pulls. It is geared too fast for
stoneboat. Will stall out within 20 feet. Motor runs good. Have
head off and all looks good inside. Was hoping someone
would know of a ring and pinion with a lower ratio I could swap
in. I heard a cockshutt transmission is similar. Any input would
be great. Worst comes to worse I am gonna cut my centers
out and put them in a set of 14.9x28 I have available

MH never had ring and pinion gear tooth count changes between standard and row crop tractors in the parts books I have. Transmission inputs had changes depending whether 1350 or 1500 rated speed under load. The F162 engine is a good runner, but was always short on power compared to other engines. Cockshutt parts will not fit the MH rear end as they are completely different.

That's a big tire for a 30, they came with 11.2 and 12.4 from the factory. I have 3 of them that I still use, one with 11.2, one with 12.4 and one with 13.6, the tire size makes a huge difference. The one with 13.6 is pretty tame. I'm dropping a tire size on my 44 puller for next summer, from 13.6 down to 12.4, I get beat by guys runnin 12.4's fairly often. On a super good biting clay track I can kill it in 2nd with the 13.6's. Where the speed limit is 3mph I run 14.9's and 1st gear and pull heavier.

What are the differences in ratios between the transmission inputs? And is there any way other than counting teeth to tell what I have and what a different transmission has? Thanks

Counting teeth would give you an answer for sure. I don't know this for sure but I have always been told that the 30 and 44-6 Masseys were geared a little lower than the 33 and 44's because the flathead engines ran so much faster, same ring and pinion but slower in low gear, if that is true then you already have the slow gear in your 30. You would have to get into a parts book, I don't have one.

1st, 4th, and 5th are the same across all 30's, 33's and 44's
2nd, and 3rd were slower in 30's and 44-6's to compensate for faster engine speed...

Smaller tire or custom gears is about the only way to slow that 30 down.
