I am working on a MF 25 with a perkins diesel engine that allways puts out white smoke. It has allways been started with starter fluid.Do you think possibly it could be injectors or do you think its a crackbaby with allways using ether to start it causing ring and piston damage??????
any suggestions greatly appreciated.

White smoke is caused by unburnt fuel, Check that your injector bleed off line back to the tank is not blocked. could also be caused by a leaking injector or low compression not igniting the mixture.

Another check is what temp is the engine running at? Usually black exhaust from being cold but better to know what temp it is running at now, for reference later on.
It shouldn"t require either normally[extreme cold maybe] has it a history of being sprayed every start? how much was/is being used to start it? Is the fuel pre-heat elememt working and is it leaking by into the intake manifold?
Any "knocking" noise from the top or bottom of the engine when running[ excessive fuel in a cylinder]louder as revs increase? more smoke as revs increase?
post what you find and need to check on, we all hope to help.
Simpler items to check and elimate first or to know of, before doing any internal inspections.

Also drop your air filter oil bath cap and clean out the muck and refill with clean oil to the correct level, while you have that off wash out the mesh element and make sure every thing inside you air inlet system is clean and you have a good flow of air to the engine.

Guys,
Thanks for all the good ideas,Thats why I love this site !!!
Sure beats tearing down the motor before checking your sugestions out
ill keep you updated

I bet this could be caused by not enough advance.
Just turn the pump like 3d and see what's happen. I had the problem on a JD505 with Standard 23C.

In support of what Phil says (above) - These are normally very easy starting engines, if start-aid has been used regularly, points up the possibility that the 'Thermostart' in the manifold is damaged, if this is the case, cold starting would be difficult, (needing start-aid), and fuel may be bleeding in to the manifold giving the white smoke. Just a thought !

Can you describe how this thermostart works.Im familiar with the electric Ford thermostart but this looks like totally different operation.
A lot of good advice, thank all of you

The thermostart unit has a fuel line "T" connection at the rear of the fuel tank, and is mounted in the air intake manifold [ which you know anyway] and of course a wire connected to it which is "hot" when the key switch is held in the pre-heat position. In my case the switch was replaced by a aftermarket push button mounted on the dash for the start assist.
Regardless the heating element when hot enough opens a thermo activated valve, letting fuel into/onto the element and ignites it a "Whuump" will be heard and the engine rolling at this time sucks in warm air to start on.
These units can fail to close the valve when cold and let fuel leak into the intake manifold, so your burning the injected stuff plus the extra leaked in fuel.
Also a worn injector not shutting off/closing correctly can leak extra fuel into the cylinders.
Disconnect and plug or remove the thermostart fuel line and see if the smokes changes?
Hope we are of help?
