I know y'all are probably tired of my questions but, i'm trying to learn here... massey 65 with the ad 203.
was replacing the valve cover gasket and accidentally hit the tappet adjustment . And some of them spin like they are loose. I know depending on where the stroke is, some will be tight and some loose. Question is, is it possible i have gotten the valve out of adjustment ?? usually there is some sort of jamb nut that is locked down. What am i missing???
Take pity on a new guy...... Thanks

Hi, no problem with the questions, keep 'em coming! Unless you have actually used spanners on the tappet, lock nut and adjusting screw it is not possible to 'upset' the adjustment. As you probably know you will require a 1/2" open spanner for the tappet and 9/16 open ends for the nut and screw. At any time a number of tappets will 'spin'. Before any adjustments, make sure that all tappets have the locknut on the screw. As long as the clearances are correct you will have nothing to worry about. If you need to check them proceed as follows; use the 'Principle of 9'.
Starting from the front of the engine;
With number 1 valve open adjust number 8 to 012" cold.
With number 2 valve open adjust number 7 etc.
The numbers should always add up to '9'.
Be very careful not to overtighten the locknut as you can easily split the tappet.

Let us know if you need any more help.

Thanks David... It turns out I had a "stupid" attack(another). The tappets that were not under tension were turning, bolt, jamb nut and all.
I assume as it should. That"s a good trick with adjusting.. So when you say number 1 valve from the front end of the engine, it"s the first valve, number 2 is the second... straight on to the back to 8?
Does it matter about the compression or exhaust stroke?
Sorry to be thick about it. Thanks again for your help, it really helps us new guys out!
