Massey 135 that won't stop cranking

Hello everybody,

I have a quick question (hopefully) for all of you Massey fans. I have a MF 135 that I am performing general maintenance on and taking care of some quirks that have bothered me lately. The question I have is, when I turn the NEW ignition switch to start and start cranking the tractor, it just keeps on cranking even when the key is off and out! It usually stops when the motor fires but it's annoying me, I took the "kicker" on top of the starter apart and freed it up as sometimes when you hit the key the starter would spin but not engage, I fixed that problem as it now engages every time, I have had the continuous cranking problem all along though. Does anyone have any ideas I could try out on the old girl? Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Well, next time you try to start it,disconnect one of
the wires on the neutral safety switch-if the
starter disengages then you have a wiring problem. If
the engine continues to turn over with the wire
disconnected-starter rebuild time.Joe

I have seen on other sites that it may be a sticky bendix causing a problem by sticking on and not being able to return easily to a run position, I'll look at it again tomorrow, if the starter itself works well what would need rebuilding other than just monkeying around with the bendix?

(reply to post at 22:06:42 12/26/13)Okay, just to let everyone know and that person who has a similar problem someday, I have fixed the Massey 135. I was dumbfounded as to what the problem could be causing the starter to not shut off. I tested the N. safety switch-good, Ignition switch-good, checked all wiring for rogue shorts or mixed up wires-nothing. I took the starter out four times, bench tested it each time and with no load it worked perfectly, I even hooked it up using the tractors ignition system while the starter was out, worked perfect, installed it and continuous cranking again, frustrated I pulled the starter out, took it all apart, and found it was a greasy mess inside with copper dust everywhere, I threw it in the parts washer and cleaned every piece well, blew it off with compressed air and reassembled it, and it worked flawlessly. I believe that it wasn't grounding completely inside due to the film in everything, hence the faint glow of a test light would show if there was supposed to be a grounding situation. Hope this helps someone down the road.

Thanks for the Ideas,
Travis
