Perkins 3.3/3.5

Would like to know what determined which Perkins diesel engine ( 203/212 ) was used in the 165. Was the 212 an upgrade in later years or just an option? Any significant difference in reliability?

Thanks

Perkins AG4.212 Gas was in the late US 165. The 212 Diesel was in the UK market, never saw any in the US market that I recall. Even the US 255 tractor late models used a derated 236 while the early models had the 203.

We had both models of 165 on our farm. The 203 was always a better starter, though neither was bad. the 203 was quieter but for shear lugging and shaft work the 212 had the guts!

203 on early 165s,(exhaust on left) then the 212,(exhaust on right) they got wet brakes at about the same time. We had a 203 but traded it for a new 168 which had the 236.

Funny you should say that about the Perkins 212. International Harvester used that engine in the 62 hp 475 tractor. My neighbour had a 475 and a 68 hp 574 with the IH 239 engine. They seemed to think the 475 was a much better puller than the 574. Other farmers I have spoken to that had the 475 have told me the same story.
