massey fergusson 35

can anyone give me an idea as to why when i had the 35 gas running the other day putting my hand totally over the inlet on the air cleaner pipe made no difference to it at all? yet i checked the inlet pipe and hoses and they seemed fine. i am going to put a carb kit in it but was kind of puzzled?

On my to-35 if you pull the choke rod and close off inlet air to the carb,

the motor slows and the engine will die if choke is not released.

I would assume your carb is stopped up an needs a good soaking in carb cleaner and a rebuild.

After motor warm-up, my tractor will idle at 400 rpm's. Also, the motor should take the fuel without hesitation under load.

You may need a full tuneup, I normally get tuneup parts at napa including new spark plug wires.

Your air filter tower may be stopped up with dirt, that will require it be taken off, soaked in cleaner and washed out.

I took the air cleaner tower off the tractor and soaked it in a 5 gallon bucket of kerosene.

Rinsed it out over and over until the kerosene ran clean. Let it drip and air dry for about 8 hrs.
Fresh oil in the air filter cup and you should be good to go.

I would not try to take the wire mesh material out of the air filter tower to clean it, just soak it.

Where the air filter mounts is where the air supply gets to the intake. If you are covering the carb inlet which is the same as choking then that says it's sucking air from one of the many orifices on the carb or manifold meaning the gaskets are probably shot. Try closing the carb idle screw and if it still runs its getting air from somewhere else.
