massey 165 perkins engine swap?

Hello all,

I have a massey 165 with a bad ad4.203 perkins. can I put a different perkins, say a ad4.236 in this machine? It is a late 60"s model, and I would love the extra power.

Would it bolt up? Any guesses?

Thanks!

Yes, I believe the engine will bolt up to the bellhousing, but the problem is the front axle support housing. The 212, 236 and 248 Perkins all utilise a different front housing to the 203 engines. If you can source a later housing, your in business.

The 203 in the 65 used a different front housing but I am nearly sure the 165 housing was the same in the 203 and 236 /212/248engine. I fitted a 236 into a diesel Perkins engined 35 once and I am nearly sure the front cradle fitted.Fuel tank mountings may be different and rad hoses and other small things like the rev counter cable, but the clutch housing is the same on all these Massey tractors.

Hi, in addition to what has been posted below;
The starter motor on the 203 is on the right hand side. It is on the left hand side on the 212, 236 engines etc. I've just checked my '212' 165. It has the starter pinion 'bulge' on the front left hand side of the transmission casing. The opposite side is much flatter. From that point I have my doubts as to whether any other engine model would fit.
If another engine will fit the casing the next thing to consider is the flywheel and clutch. In the UK the clutch plate diameters changed from 9/11" to 10/12" in late 1970/71. Most earlier tractors will have plates with 10/10 splines. Some later engines may have a PTO plate with 25 splines. This could lead to problems unless the old clutch unit and flywheel can be used.
This in turn leads to whether an older flywheel will fit a different crankshaft boss.
Is anyone more familiar with this?

The Massey Ferguson bell housing was and still is the same today as it was when the first 35 rolled off the line. This was one great invention or design and yet it is overlooked. Even the modern 1006 Perkins can be adapted to fit on to this bellhousing and Massey did do that adapter on the 4260/4270 tractors. Different starter noses, Look at a 135 housing with the starter on the right and go back to your 165 with the starter on the left, David.....All the same housing.

Hi Sam, looks like I have to concede this one. I can see that there is provision for the starter nose on the opposite side. I cannot find any commonality in part numbers for the transmission casing in my 135 and 165 parts books but that could be down to changed part numbers.
I've never needed to fit a different model engine to a tractor so based my opnion on the difference in the casing shape which is pronounced on the 212 where the starter is located.
