Stuck in One Gear

My MH Pony is stuck in one gear. The gearshift lever can be moved in a normal fashion but doing so doesn"t change the gear. How do I correct this? Thanks, Dan

This is straight from Big Dean - "Getting the main shift lever unstuck
Pull your filler plug for the transmission look inside you will see a big gear. Find a level spot shut off the tractor. Push the clutch down & put the high low shifter in neutral to relieve any pressure that might be on the gears. With a long screwdriver or a small pry bar pry the big gear forward if it is hung in reverse pry it back if it is hung in first gear. If you happen to go to far it will go in the other gear. If hung in second or third gear you have to pry on the shift fork you can see through the filler hole. if hung in second pry the fork toward the front of the tractor. If hung in third pry the fork toward the back of the tractor. You need to get it in the center. You should be able to feel the detent balls pop in the grooves in the shift rail as you move the gear. Through the years I have probably unstuck at least a 1000 of them this way. It is a common problem on the Massey tractors after they get a little wear on them".
And a little more information to help prevent the problem in the future, more information from Big Dean.
Is there any pressure on the transmission? The tractor should be on level ground or at least, brakes locked so the gear will move freely. You should also move the hi-lo range to neutral. Also, after you get it moving again, Big Dean always suggests applying pressure downward on the shifter knob when changing gears and after mine got stuck a couple more times, I started doing that and it only gets stuck now when my neighbor borrows it and forgets. One other thing, I wouldn't suggest force, but I use a very small pry bar simply because it's handier than a screw driver and has a slight bend that easily slips behind the gear I am prying. I am able to apply steady, firm pressure without using brute force. Hope this helps.

Bart,
You may be right about the pony, but I have an FE35 that this procedure works on. Dan, listen to the experts, I am just a Massey owner, far from an expert. My thoughts were that the transmissions would be accessed the same way, and the problem could be corrected the same way. Hopefully you can look at your pony and see if what I passed on would apply. Sorry for misleading anyone.

I forgot to mention that the procedure applies on:

FE-35...MF-35...F-40...MH-50...MF-50...MF-65
MF-135...MF-150...MF-165 and few others.

The MH Pony and older MH tractors had a completely different transmission design.

Bart,
Very nice, I'm assuming that's yours. I'm glad you corrected me. I'm just hoping my misleading information didn't cause Dan any problems. I guess I have passed on this information about ten times, but I don't remember a pony being stuck in gear. I know it has helped some folks because they posted back that it was successful.

A beautiful Pony, Bart. Your advice has not caused a problem, C.T. Maybe someone who has faced this problem will come on and explain how they corrected it. I thank both of you. Dan

Unfortunately I do'nt have a Pony but I wd like to have one. I drove Pony's few times in past years I remember that it has 3 forward and one rear gears.

I use MF's for ~ 45 years now... I know them from the bumper to draw-bar but nothing on Pony's.

Just a tough...if you can remove the shifter stick
which may be retainedby a snap-ring or retaining plate with 2 screws if the stick is removed you will see 2 sliders whith notch on each if the nothes are not centered face of the hole you may pry "gently" do not force it.. to align the 2 noches together then the stick will fall between both (neutral position). The shifter tip may be worn and cause it to jump out of the rails.
To do that the tractor must be on flat surface to avoid any strain on the power train to permit the gears to move freely. If the shifter tip is worn you may ask a good welder to weld and grind the tip to original dimention.

I just googled "massey ferguson 35 stuck in gear" and found your post. My tractor was stuck in reverse. I used your method and it worked straight away. I am back to the fire-breaks - thankyou very much for the sound advice.
