Getting the seed drill prepared for some work and found the wheel hubs / axles needed adjustment. There is no adjustment left; both the axles and the hub centres have worn. Dismantling revealed the reasons for the excessive wear:
1). The hub has a journal bearing.
2). The journal bearing has a large washer holding it in place behind a stepped washer and pin. The outside diameter of the washer is a whisker smaller than the internal diameter of the hub and the grease cap is outside the washer.
This means that the grease does a wonderful job of keeping the grease cap full of grease, the locating pin and stepped washer covered in grease and that almost no grease reaches the journal bearing.
The plan now is to have two new axles turned and fit roller bearings in place of the journals. The end of the axle will be altered to allow grease to be pushed down it and then through an aperture into the bearing. Not sure if this is the best way to go about it. Any ideas?
I have attached a picture of the machine and also of the hub and axle from the parts book.
Thanks,
