Makes a knocking noise when lifting something heavy.Lifts fine just little knock. Where is filter located. Think it is 74-75 model.

The hydraulic filter is located on top of the hydraulic pump. Removal of the top cover is necessary to service it.

my 165 also makes a slight tapping when lifting heavy. Normal for mine and it works fine, and has for many years. Same with my 135. I lift round bales all day long and 750 pound rotary cutter with no problems. Not sure of your situation is the same. You could check oil and clean or replace filter to be sure. Many older posts here on changing hydraulic filters.

It's not uncommon and probably isn't filter related if it otherwise works properly. Look in the archives on here for more info.

My 175 knocks when lifting heavy stuff. The 165 I grew up with never made a noise lifting. I asked the old mechanic at my local Massey dealer who is 75 and still works everyday and has worked on Masseys his whole life and he said that was normal. He said some tractors did it when they were new and others didn't. If one of the pins on the side of the transmission tunnel that locate the pump breaks it will knock even louder, so you can check that, but outside of that I reckon it's normal.
