MF 165 Starting Problems

My 165 is not starting nor will it stay running after being jumped. When I bought the tractor the previous owner told me that it probably needed a new battery. It ran fine the first day I had it, but the next day it wouldn't start. I jumped the tractor, but it would only run for a few minutes. After replacing the battery the tractor ran fine for several weeks then recently it wouldn't start. It doesn't make any noise at all when I turn the key it would start and run when hooked up with jumper cables, but whenever the cables are taken off it would die. I had the generator tested and it apparently is fine. I also replaced the plug wires, but still nothing. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

If the solenoid does'nt click (or receive 12v) check the connector on the back of the keyswitch and safety switch which prevents the tractor from being started in gear. The switch is on top of the front of the gearbox and can easily be removed to check it. I had this problem and although they are cheap, I could'nt wait and took mine apart, cleaned it up and it's still working ten years later. You can bypass it to test, but make sure it's out of gear and be very careful!

Does it show a charge when running? If not the voltage regulator could be bad. I would guess when it dies, it's running out of juice and not creating enough spark. I'm just guessing though.

A agree with previous posting. Put a voltmeter on the battery, it should read a greater amount of volts than with the engine off. I don"t have the specs on your tractor I would guess it should be over 13 volts. My 135 has a bad alternator and I"ve ran it for hours just on the battery supplying power to the coil with no problems. I"m not sure how long a fully charged battery would last without charging it though. You may also want check all battery connections. I had a ground wire fail before.

If a new battery makes it run for a few weeks then it dies and won't start........and after that boosting it makes it run but only for a few minutes.........then it is DEFINITELY not charging. Look over your charging system and test everything. On my old 202 it was doing similar things, turned out I just had to excite the generator and everything has been good ever since.

I had the same problem. If I charged the battery it would start and run until the battery was drained. My generator was not charging.
