MF135 shifting transmission.

I"m a little embarrassed to ask this since I own my tractor for about 4 years now but here it goes. I have a 1969 Massey Ferguson 135 with a Perkins AG152 motor and 6 speed transmission. Can you shift gears in this tractor on the fly or in other words can you change gears while moving? I tried a few times and the tractor just didn"t want to do it, grinding gear noises. I"m guessing its not a syncro-mesh transmission and can"t be shifting while moving.

yes but you have to match your engine speed to the ground speed of the gear you trying to shift into even then you can still a light clash

No, not synchronized. GBS is right. Double clutching might help. I usually just use the clutch to get it out of gear and then switch it (up or down) without the clutch once it's ready. Going down you will have to up the rpms to match the ground speed. That would be much easier with a foot throttle control, but... It takes a bit of practice -- and patience, both while switching and getting the experience. I've found the tendency is to try the next gear too soon when going up.

On both our 165 and 285 we can shift up from 2nd to 3rd no problems on the road, maybe just a little clash. No down shifting tho. Just slow down using engine and brakes, and then start over from 2nd if you have to.

As others have already said it is possible with experience.
Changing up is easy, but don't rush it. Changing down you have to match the revs and "double de-clutch". I have managed it uphill with a load of hay, but your better off choosing the right gear at the bottom and sticking to it.
Practice makes perfect !

Have a MF 240 (8-speed) not synchronized.

In high range, if double clutched, you can shift on the fly. I can go 1(5) to 4(8) and 4(8) to 1(5) in order with no gear clash. Can even shift with out clutch and have no gear clash. Low range is possible but generally you lose too much speed between gears to make a clean shift, though I've done it in the field, i.e. 3 to 4.

I haul loaded wagons of hay and loaded manure spreader, no worries on missing gears on hills. Only exception is not trying to make the 2 to 3 shift going uphill, gears are spaced a lot different than the 1 to 2 shift.

My advice, practice on a smooth, flat road and just go up and down between 1st and 2nd, get good, then try 1 2 3, you'll get it.
