hi all i have a mf 231 that has me wanting to beat my head against a wall. the tractor has run fine and has been a good tractor but while bush hogging it reved up then died. so i got it started again and it ran for hours and did it again. so i got it and went thru the fuel system and changed filters made sure nothing was blocked and the tank was drained and it was clean but the i got to thinking about the rev up part befor it died. has any one had this type of problem? any thoughts on this would be very great full.

Make sure the bleed oriface is open on top of filter base return line. If it plugs the air that is to go through it will enter injection pump and cause a shutdown.

i took air and blew all the lines out i have never have a diesel rev up like this then die and thats what has me rackin my brains. i do know there is whats called a deisel runaway but thats not what happen it juset rev then died and it had to be cranked a bit to get it primed again. but i will recheck to make sure thats not clogged thanks for the input

yes i beleed the pump top and bottem bleeder. but for some reason i don't think air is my problem. i have ran deisels out of fuel and have had them die for a clogged filter but they aways spit and sputter then die when they are starved of fuel. out of all my years i have never had on rev then die. then its like you have to crank it a bit to prime it again to get it started. i have even changed all the rubber gormets on the fuel lines but still you can walk out crank it and let it run it may run for hours then rev up and shut down. go figure. thats why i'm wondering fuel lift pump or injecter pump. but i can't for the life of me say lift pump because the lift pump sould have nothing to do with the rev up part. but thanks for the in put guys because i'm at a loss here

Hi
I have a Super 90 that did something similar...But it didnt die. When we would start the tractor it, sometimes, would roar away for a second or two then idle to normal.
Found out it had an extra fuel start aid, where the return diesel line entered the fuel tank.
I guess this start aid was pumping extra fuel into the air intake. When we removed the start aid mechanism the problem disapeared.
May be a long shot to your problem? But its something to look at if you have this start aid too?
I cant think of something else that may cause your tractor to suddenly rev up.

While cleaning the tank, did you also check the fuel valve itself? I had the valve glogged up with gunk, which caused similar symptons. Revving up before dying is a definite sign of fuel starvation.
