dry to wet brake conversion question

A guy wants me to fix his brakes on a Massey 175 with square axle housing. The tractor is in really rough shape but does run pretty good. Question is , would it be worth his spending the extra money for the conversion. My thoughts are that he would be just as well to replace the actuators and discs for the dry as spending the extra money. I haven't torn into it yet, but would almost bet that the brakes have never been worked on so they are probably worn out to include the actuators. Give me your thoughts. Keith

Hello Keith,
Conversion kits in the UK cost the equivalent to about $550 per side including tax. It is difficult to justify in the region of twice the cost of replacing the dry brake components. Before deciding to replace all parts it is important to know what is happening. If you have good pedal pressure and little braking efficiency then it could be down to leaking oil seals or worn out discs. If either side is 'grabbing' at the slightest touch of the pedal then its probably worn actuators. In extreme cases it will be necessary to stop the tractor and change direction briefly to release them.
Make sure that all of the linkage is free particularly the point at which the brake arms pivot and the actuator rod pivot bush in the brake arm. Ensure that the adjustment at the actuator rod id done first then adjust the brake rods as required.
Let us know what you find.

I haven't started on it yet, but from the lack of care this tractor has had, my guess is that the brakes are just worn out. I really doubt they've ever had anything other than adjusting done to the. There is no grab at all. There is no drag on the left one & it has been adjusted as far as possible. The right one will take hold if you're going slow, but I wouldn't trust it to stop with. Gonna tear into it tomorrow but I just can't see spending the money for a conversion kit when the dry brake system will probably work as long as this tractors around. It's in bad shape LOL. Keith
