2nd time my MH 44 Special has locked it"s self in 1st gear...removed the shift lever case and manually pushed the 1st gear slide into neutral...could not see any obvious wear to cause...okay for 1 year and it did it again...what can I look for and do to correct? Thanks.

This happens when driver comes out of reverse quickly and moves shift lever to 2-3 or 4-5 shift rail. the 1st-reverse rail overshoots the neutral detent and goes to first gear. Solution, don't shift it fast, and it won't ever do it again. I used to have it happen on dad's 30 and 44. It may help to replace the rail ball springs if they appear weak too.

I have seen where the gear shift lever has slid from one rail to another rail leaving the transmission in the gear being used.To cure this problem on my dads 44 I built up the end of the gear shift lever and put a spacer washer between the cup and snap ring that holds the gear shift in place.I also built up the wear spots on the sides of the gear shift ball where the guide pins rub.Buy doing these three things I no longer have any problems with it.When I had the gear shift cover off I also made sure that all of the bolts in the shift rail forks were tight.
