I can't seem to find the hydraulic oil filter on my 1963 MF 35 deluxe farm tractor I have removed side plates but can't see anything should I be able to see it

If it's like the later models it's up beside the gear shifts on the left side and you wouldn't see it. You have to reach in and it should have a safety wire holding the wing bolt.

This is how it looks in the transmission housing with the lid off. The filter you are looking for is the cannister type part to the rear left of the hydraulic pump. You can see in the pic the 'wings' on the top to help unscrew it, also the wire tie. Changing the filter is just about do-able from the PTO inspection plate. Easy if you have been a pick-pocket in a former life!
The next pic is a breakdown of the filter assembly. The filter is washable.
