massey 3165 shift fork broke

there are two large springs for the shift lever none were on my machine one was broke in the gearbox with the shift lever spring . where do the large springs go the parts book shows them under the rubber boot which makes no sense......thanks bill

There is one large spring under each boot to keep it from deforming. The shift rail detent springs are held under the transmission top cover assembly just back of neutral start switch.

Thanks mr. deiseltech in order to change the shift rail fork i have to split the tractor where transmion is bolted to differential housing is this correct?

Yes, you're correct. A rear split is needed along with the shift cover too.
