The local diesel shop sold me some olives he said were 5/16 but they need to be stretched to get them on 5/16 tubing seem more like 1/4. Is this normal? I have some 5/16 brass olives I could use if they are ok. What do you think?

Delphi has both 1/4 and 5/16 inch rubber line sleeves with the same OD, but for 2 line sizes. 1/4 is used on most 4 cyl Perkins engines while 5/16 is usually on 6 cyl pumps and filter bases. Brass sleeves were used before the rubber ones were, but tend to be harder to seal. Rubber does not need to be as tight to seal, and helps prevent line cracking. They can be hard to remove after they are in place though, and need a pick to break them out for line removal. I would use what you have that fits, brass may be worth a try if it can be made to seal.

well these seem to be ok as long as stretching them is not a problem. They fit very tight in the filter though, is that normal?

They are tight in filter as 1/4 in sleeve on 5/16 in line will be larger. if you can get it in and nut started it should be OK. If not thinner wall sleeves are needed.
