MF-165 multipower excessive noise in front of transmission a

Frank in Mo.

New User
Changed oil in transmission and hydraulic system due to excessive noises. Still have lots of noise and see extreme turbulence in oil while looking through the fill cap with engine running.I know the noise shouldn't be there but need to use tractor to cut hay.
Is the turbulence in the oil normal, and if not what could be causing it. Thanks for helping.
Also, next post I'll have to try explain the noise, maybe someone out there can hep me pinpoint the cause before i have to split the tractor or cause more damage.

First question Frank....was there any metal in the oil drained from the transmission drain plug?
Turbulence is normal if the clutch pedal is up.
You would have both input gears turning their relevant drive trains in this case. More importantly, does the noise disappear when the pedal is depressed thru either the first or 2nd stages?
Let us know,
Evan.

Masseynut i have the same noise when clutch is depressed on my 202 i'm going to split it very soon i'm hoping that it's the release bearing and not the input shaft bearing gone bad whats your take on my next project. Sorry for stealing this thread but it is very similar

Masseynut australia, In answer to first question yes a very small amount of metal filings in the bottom of the filter did not see any in the sump. I pulled off the PTO shift plate to get to the pump filter.
Second question, noise does not stop when you depress clutch through first stage but goes copletely quiet when depressed through the second stage shutting off the pumps.

So we have established this noise is on the PTO drive side of the transmission.
If the noise is coming from the front of the transmission, I'd hazard a guess and say that either the two bearings(16&18), that support the input shaft or the bearing(24) on the lower shaft in the front of the box may have collapsed,(see pic).
See how you go,
Evan.

Masseynut, thanks foer the assistance, there are a few more symptoms I would like to share as I am not in the position to split the tractor at this time.In the middle of hay season.
The noise gets worse as the oil heats up and the PTO is running. Also, looking at the oil through the transmission fill hole while the engine is running the oil is like niagra falls. Is there a possibility that the relief valve in the multipower control block located in the clutch housing could be blowing.
Another thing I forgot to tell you was the hydraulic pump filter was only half there as the screen had desenigrated. Only the bottom half of the screen was left.
If the relief valve was blowing what could cause that? Thanks

The Multi-power valve in the clutch housing either energizes the clutch pack, or dumps oil back into the transmission.
The regulator valve will only "shuttle" slightly within the housing to regulate line pressure. I don't believe that either could stir the oil in the fashion that you mention.

More likely to be a split in the internal feed pipe to the input housing and M.power valve, BUT the multi-power would be rendered in-operative, I believe. Is the multi-power working correctly?
If you are sure that this noise is coming from the transmission, I'd still bet on a failed bearing on the PTO drive side.
It's possible that if one or both of the pump dowels have broken, it could also give you a similar noise. This would be coming from further back under the seat area.
The relief valve is set back in the centre or diff housing, on the auxillary pump. Not much chance it could stir the oil in the transmission to that extent.
The filter you described is the linkage hydraulic filter. There is most likely a second filter for the auxillary pump, depending on the configuration and serial number of your tractor.
Apologies, I posted a pic of the standard transmission instead of the multi-power box,
Evan.

Hi Trac,
Because your noise is occurring when the clutch pedal IS depressed, I suspect the thrust release bearing as you suggested.
With the pedal fully depressed, all drive is stopped to the transmission, eliminating the possibility of your noise coming from there.
Evan.
