First question Frank....was there any metal in the oil drained from the transmission drain plug? Turbulence is normal if the clutch pedal is up.
You would have both input gears turning their relevant drive trains in this case. More importantly, does the noise disappear when the pedal is depressed thru either the first or 2nd stages? Let us know, Evan.

Masseynut australia, In answer to first question yes a very small amount of metal filings in the bottom of the filter did not see any in the sump. I pulled off the PTO shift plate to get to the pump filter.
Second question, noise does not stop when you depress clutch through first stage but goes copletely quiet when depressed through the second stage shutting off the pumps.

Masseynut i have the same noise when clutch is depressed on my 202 i'm going to split it very soon i'm hoping that it's the release bearing and not the input shaft bearing gone bad whats your take on my next project. Sorry for stealing this thread but it is very similar

Hi Trac, Because your noise is occurring when the clutch pedal IS depressed, I suspect the thrust release bearing as you suggested.
With the pedal fully depressed, all drive is stopped to the transmission, eliminating the possibility of your noise coming from there. Evan.

So we have established this noise is on the PTO drive side of the transmission. If the noise is coming from the front of the transmission, I'd hazard a guess and say that either the two bearings(16&18), that support the input shaft or the bearing(24) on the lower shaft in the front of the box may have collapsed,(see pic). See how you go, Evan.
