57-58 F-40 Ferguson

My F-40 needs a little repair, I have used it for
several years for moving & pushing dirt with the
loader. now I want to put a brush-hog on it but the
3-point dose not lift, never used it before, what"s
the first things to look at? not sure where to
start, except to remove the loader. thanks Ron

I take it your loader has an engine mounted pump??? And is not relying on the Ferguson internal pump? If that is correct you first of all need to check that it does have a pump fitted or, if it is in there, that it is putting up pressure. Remove the top transfer plate and try turning over the engine to see if it puts oil up the stack-pipe, Warning..... this oil could hit the roof !, so remove the distributer cap and try it on the starter first. I suspect that the control valve is stuck closed so the pump will not put pressure up this pipe. Take the dip stick side plate off and try moving the valve back and forth to see if it frees up, then hit the starter again. You need to get oil up that stack pipe for the ram to lift. Blown 'O' rings on that pipe will also stop the lift from working.
Be careful when working with high pressure hydraulic oil do not let it penetrate your skin.
