This the second bearing I have installed on the column . I don't know how far in to install the race on the lower bearing the one that sets on the steering shaft. This cost about $30 bucks so far. It destroys them maybe its the other parts but they seem fine. No one seem to be answering my post. What am I doing wrong . Please help if you can.

The timing was ok last time until it spun out . That is the bearing got destroyed then it wouldn't do nothing but spin around and the wheels not moving.Best Regards Luckybodog

1969 Massey Ferguson 135 It has manual steering. Sorry I didn't mention the important stuff its got me frustrated. Also one article I read said use Corn head grease green. I never heard of this stuff. The oil or grease that was in it was dirty rusty stuff . I use a syringe and sucked it all out.I installed 2 bearing so far both have spun out. When I sucked out the bearing parts there were more in there than there should been I had lost some from the first one there were in the bottom i use a magnet and got them out. I think there were some in there from the original bearing as well. I appreciate you taking the time to help! Best Regards Dwayne

Hi Dwayne, is this the type of steering box that you have fitted to your tractor?

Well it look similar but not exact . Mine is a 1969 Massey Ferguson 135 Manuel Steering with a 3 cylinder perkins Gas and is a USA one. The gears don't look as wide in my box and their is a bearing at the top of the column fits down in then on the bottom is the thrust bearing which I call a taper bearing that fits on the shaft thats the one that keeps getting destroyed and the one I wonder about how far the race should go in to make the preload right with the shims that are there. I could take a picture of it tomorrow and post it if it would help. Thanks for helping me.

Hi Dwayne,
The steering box is slightly different on UK 135's. This box shares a little more similarity with boxes fitted to the 165 and upwards. Have you replaced both bearing rings and can be certain that the full number of ball bearings were fitted? Is there a bush or bearing fitted at the top of the column? By the looks of it it is necessary to fit shims as a means of adjustment. If so, have you set it up so that there is a very very small pre-load on the bearing?

Have you replaced both bearing rings and can be certain that the full number of ball bearings were fitted? Not sure what this means.I have replaced the bearing in the top of the column and the bearing and race in the bottom of the column. I can't remember how far in the race was on the original bearing on the bottom of the column . I am not sure how to make the pre-load adjustment I put the shims in but don't know how to measure it. Best Regards Dwayne

I am not sure how to set the pre load on the bearing. I think that's what wrong I have the race in too far or not far enough which is going to change the amount of shims I use. The shims in the picture were there when I took it apart. I am not sure the exact spot were the race was originally. Best Regards Dwayne

Hi,is there a bearing at the bottom end of the steering shaft or is there one at the top of the tube? Having a bearing in the middle means that there must be abother one to adjust it against.

There is a bearing at bottom end of the shaft I just took a picture of the race not the bearing. Its a taper kind . There is a bearing at the top its new it is one inside of sleeve thing with felt piece at the bottom of it . There is not one in the middle and wasn't one as far as I know. If you need any pictures or any more information let me thanks . Dwayne
