Mf wood saw and tractor cover

Hi Chaps,

A while back I came across an old ferguson saw bench, was missing its Id plate, but I wanted something to use, not just restore and display, tho if I come across one worthy of restoration that could happen too.

I also came with a belt but no pto pulley or bracket.
Welds looked good, and it wasn't too stuffed around with.
(stuffed around with is the technical term for improved or modded by previous owners). hehe.

Now I was after a pto pulley box, and after recovering from hearing the price the tractor wreckers wanted for one, I decided to wait for a clearing sale or two and let patience pay off.
Eventually, I came across one, but it was for the t20, and thus had the smaller pto spline than the one my Mf35 has.

I then came across another one, but it was physically larger than the t20 box, mounting spacing was the same, pto spline was correct, but its a good inch wider than the t20.

At that time I was not entirely sure it would fit with the lower 3pl arms, but decided to give it a go anyway and make the bracket to fit accordingly.

More coffees and internet surfing, and I had the drawings for the bracket, and made mine a multi fit so I can use the saw on my35 and the outlaws ted20.
Thus the offset when fitted at the top bracket, and spacing away from the non flat mounting surface of the larger pto gearbox pulley.

Finally got it all together after cleaning up the threads on the nuts and studs, and refitting a loose stud and it works well with no noises, I then had to move the pulley on the saw axle over a bit towards the center to allow for better tracking of the belt and the whole things works as it should.

A lot safer than using a chainsaw on a loose pile of branches plunge cutting to length.

During the internet research I came across a picture of an old ferguson tractor cover, we had some old canvas awnings from a garage sale, so made up some patterns and made a custom fit for the annoying aftermarket seat and I think it turned out well.
Made the back of it come right out and over the top 3pl so that water entry point is well covered.

cheers, hope someone finds it usefull.

And I hope you find this machine healthy! I get a lot of feedback out it mentioning it, but one of these saws maimed and crippled half of my mother's family.. I believe these were the 'impotis'? for the new invention of 'chain saw'...
I gave a belt drive just like yours to a friend years ago... I spotted it the other day, never used, gathering dust, so he decided to let me sit on it again for the next millennium or 2... I may want to power a generator or pump with it, but not a buzz saw... my ancestors would be spinning in their graves....
I like your cover too, I cut up old billboard sheets and add grommets. I try to cover the tires as much as possible... or do you spell it 'tyre'?? I like those you have too. Wish I had a set of 28" turfs..
Classy streamlined affair tho, good luck with it all!

I know lots of guys are going to disagree, but that thing is just waiting to kill somebody. Don"t do it. There"s a reason nobody makes anything like that anymore.
My brother has rebuilt Pop"s old Tecumseh 2-wheel buzz saw, and I said the same thing, don"t do it. He wanted to show me how good it cut, and it did until it threw a cut-off log about 25". He said "It"s never done THAT before!" I think those are the last words guys say around thjose things.

Great cover! but after looking at the direction of
the blade i don't see how it could throw anything
over your head but with old tools lacks safety
shields an such use with care!

Hi Chaps.
Appreciate the warnings, have used these before, but a larger bench run by larger tractor, and larger belt, cutting sleepers.

I do approach them with respect.

Yep, you cant get complacent, nor lazy around them.

I have a smaller Y piece of wood that I use to hold the branches nearer the blade.
If it grabs, or kicks the wood is going to ensure my hand is well clear. Also gives your body a better stance, and you are not bending over towards the blade.

The axle is sound, the blade is in good condition and cuts well, and will be inspected for chipped teeth, cracks, poor gulleting etc.

As mentioned, I feel its safer than using a chainsaw, as those things can bite hard too if not respected.

Actually, if you check out evilbay, you will see many wood saw benches, but self powered that operate on the swinging bed into the saw blade, they just have more safety covers on all the bits, but do exactly the same thing, cut wood with a large rotating blade.

Hi Chaps.
Just an update.
Still have all my arms and legs, and fingers too.

Saw has been very helpful and made it much easier and quicker to cut up wood into the lengths we require for the wood stove.

Enables us to cut longer lengths when out, and bring it back to do final cuts on the saw.
Saves time picking up after cutting lots of smaller bits and reduces tiredness when using the chainsaw.

Can cut directly into a wheelbarrow too and saves having to handle the wood too many times.

Buzz saw rigs are still made and sold. They are no more dangerous than a chainsaw. Of course a lot of people like to drink half a case of beer while using the saw and then wonder where their hand went........
