Can you post a picture of the carby side of the motor.
Is there a heat shield between the exhaust and the tank ?
Can you let us know when it happens, ie general running or only after heavy work, what is your ambient temp your running at.
Has the rocker cover breather pipe got a hole on it, hole in exhaust gasket leaking hot gases towards the tank etc.
With engine hot, correct setting for carby is as follows.
main jet 2 1/2 turns out from gently seated. fine tune from there, in 1/2 turn for light work, out 1/2 turn for heavy work.
Engine should respond to throttle without black smoke.
If hesitant, richen, if black smoke, screw in.
With the Idle mixture screwing in the mixture screw richens the mix, screwing it out leans the idle out.
at 400rpm idle.
Screw in till engine starts to hunt, then screw out slowly till it runs evenly.
That should get you in the ball park to see if anything is wildly out of spec.
