TE20 boiling fuel

RDV

New User
Hi all,
Im wondering if anyone can tell me why on earth the fuel in the tank of my te20 is boiling! Is the ignition not timed right and the exhaust manifold is getting too hot? Mixture too lean? How do I correct this problem?!

Thanks,
Ryan

Hi Ryan,
Can you post a picture of the carby side of the motor.
Is there a heat shield between the exhaust and the tank ?

Can you let us know when it happens, ie general running or only after heavy work, what is your ambient temp your running at.

Has the rocker cover breather pipe got a hole on it, hole in exhaust gasket leaking hot gases towards the tank etc.

With engine hot, correct setting for carby is as follows.
main jet 2 1/2 turns out from gently seated. fine tune from there, in 1/2 turn for light work, out 1/2 turn for heavy work.
Engine should respond to throttle without black smoke.
If hesitant, richen, if black smoke, screw in.
With the Idle mixture screwing in the mixture screw richens the mix, screwing it out leans the idle out.

at 400rpm idle.

Screw in till engine starts to hunt, then screw out slowly till it runs evenly.

That should get you in the ball park to see if anything is wildly out of spec.

It"s called "winter gas". My 2N does it real bad mowing grass in the spring. Then they start refining summer blend gas and it stops boiling. A lot of atv"s and motorcycles have the same problem. I thought the tank might rupture it was so bad. I keep the cap loose now and the fumes almost make me sick.

rdv,
I feel your pain,
no matter the fuel blend, I would not feel comfortable with the gas boiling.

my old TO-35 has a metal heat shield over the exhaust manifold, so it keeps some of the heat of the exhaust manifold away from the gas tank.

look at the picture, you might buy a heat shield for a to 35 or make one and retrofit to your tractor.

my old buddy, farmer don, he has a to30 and he was looking at the heat shield on my tractor one day.

same issue, he said the gas boils in his tractor and he did not like the sound of it, he was thinking of building a heat shield like mine.

I have never heard the gas boil in my tank, but who knows it may have.

I try to keep it tuned right, as it idles at 400 rpms and runs/pulls like a top.

When I was young using a Fergy 30 on a hot day working ground it was low on gas. Dad brought a 5 gallon can and a funnel that locks on. I poured gas in and .... next thing i had a spill! Gas all over the hot engine and manifold. It made a cloud of "steam" - I was very lucky it didn't ignite! What a poor place for a gas tank. Old Farmall used to spurt gas out the cap on hot days until dad got a tall cap for it.

Thanks for the response. What a great resource for tractor folks. Where should I look for a heat shield?

look up
silver fox tractor spares, ltd
should come up as a English company.
they show a heat shield for a tea/ted to20

Ferguson Tractor TEA/TED, FE35, 135 Exhaust Heat Shield

I could not save a picture of it and show it to you, do not know why.
