MF 175 adjusting brakes...

I have recently bought this MF 175 with 3200 hours on it. the brakes didn't work very good, so after crawling underneath the tractor I discovered that the right brake rod was bent up really bad. I took it off and straightened it out and after looking at the repair manual I got it adjusted so it'll drag the right side tire when you jump on the brake at 2 to 4mph or so. I've tried everything I can think of to get the left side to work and I get very little brake on that side. So I think that probably the left side may have been used the most and is just plain worn out. However, this tractor has the MF 32 loader on it and it was the 3rd tractor on the farm and it has sat a while under a covered roof, so maybe it is stuck a little bit?? any ideas??

Answer....your left side has got oil on the brake disc, that is if you can get a pedal clearance from the footplate? Short term solution that sometimes works..... Find the drain slot under the housing, it will be along the line of the mounting flange and poke out the crud with a piece of wire or even a slim knife blade. Now drive around in high first gear standing hard on that brake to get as much heat into it as possible, thai will possibly burn off the oil for a tempory brake.
Long term solution(and the proper one!) Dismantle the half axle off the transmission housing, (using an engine crane) and replace the brake discs, actuator and the seal in the cover plate.

yes.. the adjusting rod is hitting the footplate. If I cut off 1/2" to 3/4" of the adjusting rod with a hacksaw it would probably give me the ability to get more brakes on the left side or cut a little piece off the footplate..

Other than that I would have to take it all apart and rebuild the brakes..

hey thanks folks. I had shoulder surgery 2 days after I bought this tractor so I haven't been able to work on it. I did go out and check the left side and it's got a oil leak around the hub, so now I know the seal is bad. I am going to try to clean out the crud and drive it around to heat up the brake as you've said. that should give me more stopping power.

well I had today off and I worked on the brake problem and got the left side to work really great!! I can drag that tire down the driveway just like the right side now!! WOW!! it's really nice to have good brakes!!
This MF 175 has a model#32 MF loader on it with loaded tires so I want to be able to stop good when I'm pushing dirt or snow with it.I want to get a set of chains for it as well. It does have a weight block to go on the 3pt hitch.
