202/35 power steering intermittent and leaking

My 202 is spewing power steering fluid from the top of the steering column just under the steering wheel. The steering is working intermittently. Do I just need a seal in the column or is it an indication of more serious issues?

My one and only experience with PS was when i bought a 35 that had it and the pressure relief valve stuck or clogged or something and it warped the cyl. face along with the sector but I've seen manual sectors puking from the top so it's probably just the upper seal gone and most people replace the fluid with corn head grease,it goes in under the battery tray.

2Tractors just want to clear the air on this But don't put corn head grease in anything that power steering goes will cause damage to pump. I know you said manual steering but just in case.

I have some manuals. The 202 service manual covers the steering gear very well but nothing about the pump. The owners manual mentions the pressure 1,100lbs but not how to test or adjust. This page is from the parts manual, is the valve in here somewhere? Thanks for the replies.

h/f sells pressure gauge that goes up to 3,000 lbs = $25 or so, I made up some adapters and deadheaded one into the output side of the pump, doesn't take long to get a reading, anything over 1,000 lbs is fine

make sure the p/s pump cover is on, when relief valve pops there is a gush of fluid into the reservoir, makes a big mess fast with lid off

replacing top seal on the steering column isn't hard, getting cowl and everything else off to get down there is PITA

replace that big O-ring while you have it apart, only take the top part off

Thanks, I probably would have done it already if it weren't for getting the cowl out. I just hope a new seal doesn't blow for some reason.
