Your problem is not an unusual one. The early front ends did have trouble in the spindle housing area, if the front pivot bush or pin was let go too long once worn out. This allows the axle beam to "lay back", putting excessive pressure on the wheel bearings and spindle housings. The steering wheel may also tend to have a mind of it's own when turning it close to full lock.
I have a 35 here in the workshop for repairs at the moment,(not steering related though), and it's a classic case of a bent spindle housing, (see pic). The owner has even gone to the trouble of fitting steering "dampers" left and right to absorb the savageness of the steering.
This may be your problem if the shock load was enough to bend the spindle housing, just a thought,
