MF 65 diesel

Smokes like a freight train, smells like raw fuel. Injector pump is wet. My father in law rebuilt it in ag mechanics school 25 years ago, but its upkeep has been sketchy at best. I have been using it to bale with and a little plowing, but the exhaust is nearly unbearable. It's had regular service since i've run it{4 years} but no improvement on smoke. Which direction should I go to troubleshooting and repairing?

Are we talking black or blue smoke here?
Black smoke would indicate an excess fuel problem and/or some sort of restriction on the air intake side.
Blue smoke neally always relates to an oil control problem.
Let us know which, and we can talk you thru some ideas,
Evan.

Definitely black smoke. It has an oil bath air cleaner, which I have rinsed out the mesh element, cleaned out the sump and refilled with fresh oil to the fill mark. Injectors are who knows how old, and my father-in-law is not sure whether the injector pump was rebuilt or not when he went through the engine. Thanks.

It sounds to me like the injectors are shot and the fuel pump needs a service. I would be tempted to take the air intake manifold off and check that too.

I'd be disconnecting the fuel pipe to the thermostart glow plug on the intake manifold as well, and giving it a run.
If these units fail, it can "flood" the intake with fuel on initial start-up, and if they fail big time, leak excessive amounts of fuel while the engine is running.
Do as Roy has suggested and run the engine with the intake piping disconnected. The "bowl" gauze may be clean, but I have seen the upper section choked to the maximum, and causing excessive restriction as well.
let us know your progress,
Evan.
