Massey Ferguson 165 hyd filter?

I recently bought a MF 165 about 1973 vintage extra hydraulic valves in front of the seat.

The 3 point lowers under power very slowly. I want to look into cleaning the hydraulic filter, I have read on the net that it may be a problem, but I do not know where to attack this project.

I have several manuals that kind of show where it is, but if someone knows where it is and how to get it out, it would help me out alot.

Thanks for any help you have, Ken Bauman

Hi Ken,
First of all the 3-point linkage does not lower 'under power'. The weight of the lift arms or implement take them down.
The slow drop will not be connected to the filter but it is always advantageous to check and clean the filter as you do not know when(if) it was done last.
The photos will show the location of the filter.
As yours is a 'later' tractor, check on the underside of the rear centre housing and look for a triangular plate. Filters on later tractoirs could be removed via this plate. If you have this type, drain the oil and remove the plate. There is a wire clip to remove and then a nut, washer and spring. The filter will now fall out.If you do not have this type proceed as follows; Photo is of course with the hydraulic cover removed. It is not necessary to do this to remove the filter.

Remove any pipework, hand brake rod, and for better access the left hand footplate.
It is advisable to drain the oil completely or at least to the level of the bottom bolt of the LH side cover. Remove the cover. Be careful there are sharp edges. Cut the locking wire and remove it all. You may need a small pair of pliers to loosen and then unscrew the filter. There should be one full cup on top and a shallow cup underneath with an O ring under that.
It will probably come out as one assembly.

Clean or replace as required. Suitable electrical copper wire can be used to lock the filter. In 40 years of MF work I have not had one come loose but it's there for a reason.
Reverse the procedure and replace the oil etc.

Just to repeat what Dave has said -the slow lowering of the thgree point is NOT connected to filter condition.
You must look elsewhere for the cause.
There is a fast /slow lever on the right hand side of the transmission casing that will affect this function. But there may be other causes associated with your particular hydraulic set up

Thanks for the response. I will get the filter out and have a look. I have a rather light backblade on it now but I will hang a 3 bottom plow on it to see how it goes.

I am used to a Ford 9-N 3 pt which will fall fast at the drop of the lever, waiting for the backblade to drop is taking some getting used to.

It may be binding of some linkage or the geometry of the attachment. I will look into that also.

I am stunned that this tractor model has so many optional configurations of hydraulics and it seems that there is no one answer for any problem.

It has a loader, and a valve that the previous owner added so he could run a wood splitter more easily. I don't get it yet, but I will.

I plan to own this tractor the rest of my life so the filter cleaning is something that I will do even if it is not directly related to the 3 pt slow drop.

The oil looks clear, and I will probably drain it thru a filter and reuse it

Thank you

Hi,
It was in my mind to include the Fast/Slow lever but never got round to putting it in the reply.
Are you going to the Neath Vintage Show at Cefn Coed Colliery on Sunday?

Cheers

How far is Neath Vintage Show at Cefn Coed Colliery from Cokato Minnesota?

Thanks for the help. We had snow yesterday and more predicted tonight, is it warm in South Wales, maybe I can make the show (HA HA)

Hi Ken,
Fergie Bach lives in West Wales, I live in South Wales. The show at Neath is somewhere between us.

We have had a quite hot day here today, up to 18 degrees C, maybe the hottest day so far. The distance would be quite a few pairs of shoes!!!!

Would like to see a photo of your 165 if you can post one.
