Massey Ferg 165 with Loader - Whats it worth?

I posted this earlier with a typo - 135 instead of 165. Tractor is in good shape, new rear tires, decent fronts. Has Ford industrial loader. 4200 hrs. Engine rebuilt at 3200hrs due to bad main bearing. While apart, he had the dealership install new clutch, rebuild injector pump, go thru hydraulics - new seals etc. No glow plugs, has block heater. Has multi-power?? Similar to TA on Farmalls i guess. What do you think?

Has it had a loader on it most of it's life? If it has then I wouldn't give as much for it as one that doesn't have a loader. The 165 is probably one of the best tractors Massey ever produced, but the front end wasn't really designed for constant loader use in the standard 165's. Most of the 165's I have been around that have had a loader on them for years, the front ends are worn out. I have even seen the cradle cracked under one, so I would check it very carefully, and the front end and steering is costly to rebuild in one.Around here a good 165 is a $4500.00 to $5500.00 tractor.

just check out that multi power shift.
it was a great option in its day, but its day is long ago. basely a type of automatic shift, like case-o-matic.

my local dealer said when he traded for a tractor with multi power, he traded for it assuming he would have to have the multi power unit rebuilt, before he would put it out on the lot.

the last model 165 mf made had the 4 speed trans with h/l, no multi power, that would be the one to get, but I guess they are hard to find.

however, others have had the multi power tractors for years, with no problems.

some would not let kids drive them, if the multi power goes out, then your only braking is with the wheel brakes as you will have no engine braking. So be sure the wheel brakes are in excellent condition.

I have driven it and the multi power works great...This does make me think a little tho. How likely is a working multipower to fail???......As far as the loader, this guy had it 28 yrs and didnt do anything heavy with the loader. Plowed snow seems like the biggest use....It all looks good over and underneath....We are at $5000 after starting at $6000....

I grew up with a 165, multipower with a loader on it. I have a 175 with out multipower just an 8 speed now. Honestly I wish my 175 did have multipower. I especially like the hill hold feature on multipower tractors.

He has had the tractor 28yrs and the loader has been on it the whole time....It runs good, seems tight...Had the engine rebult at 3200hrs due to main bearing. Also had new clutch put in then and rebuilt anything else that made sense while at the dealer, including hydraulics, injector pump. Has 4200hrs now. He is selling since he bought a brand new 4wd MF with loader. This guy is obviously meticulous about his stuff after seeing his shop/barn/farm....All his equipment looks like new even tho it all has some age.

I am getting a little bit afraid of it now tho considering the comments on the multipower and the effects of the loader on the front end.

Any other thoughts out there??

I have owned a 165 diesel for 12 years now,not a problem or compliant. The factory hydraulic pump is low volume which causes slow responce to the loader but there is a front mount pump that solves that problem.with the way you describe the care of this tractor and the recent repair work, sounds like a pretty good buy to me.
Just my two cents worth.

Well I bought it....The multipower had been rebuilt when the engine was redone and had to be done the 2nd time under warranty since the dealer messed something up...The bucket has its own hydraulic pump and it is strong!!!!

Tractor runs great...But the 3pt hydraulics dont work too well. They are inconsistent on how high the lift goes with an implement on. If the engine is at idle, won't lift my tiller all the way up...Also can't set the height too well at "in between" locations....Kind of touchy....I don't know how to use all the features on the lift yet tho so it could be me...Or I could need new seals in the hydraulic pump..ANy tips or suggestions??

Does it make any difference whether you are lifting with the draft control or the position control? When you are using position control do you have the draft lever all the way up, and when you are using the draft control lever do you have the position control lever all the way up? Each one has to be all the way up for the other to work properly. What does the hydraulic fluid look like? I would start with the simple stuff first.

Ok, It was user error on the 3pt lift. Works pretty good. I have another problem tho. I have a 6ft tiller. Used it yesterday on unplowed ground....When engaging the pro the tiller would work fine til I started forward in low range 1st gear. Then at times it would "take off" like the PTO was pushing the tractor pretty fast....Way faster than Low 1st.

I also noticed the PTO turns even when disengaged....How big a problem do I have here????

I am going to post a new topic on this...Thanks
