What is it?

I posted a question on Fri regarding hydraulic oil and the gentleman said I may have a different tractor than it is decaled. It has "Massey Ferguson 35" decals on both sides of the hood and the serial # is TO 35 148249. I believe it is a 1955 model. It has live power. What is it and was someone trying to "upgrade" it by placing those decals on it? I guess the same oil serves the transmission, rear end and hydraulics. What type oil would that be? Thanks for the help. I am trying to get it to an auction to settle an estate and don't want to mis-represent it.

It is a 1955 Ferguson TO-35 Massey Harris and Ferguson had already merged they kept the tractors seperate for a few years

The Massey Ferguson 35 was not released till 1960.

Your TO-35 might have Massey Harris Ferguson Company on the name plate

According to the serial number it is indeed a 1955 model. That would make it a Ferguson TO-35. If my information is correct the Massey Ferguson TO-35 was not made until 1957, beginning with serial number 171741.

What would the factory hood decals have been? What type of hyd oil does it take? Thanks, not a Ferguson guy here.

Your tractor should be painted grey and green and have Ferguson 35 metal emblems on each side of the bonnet/hood,along with a metal Ferguson badge on the front of the bonnet. Many older tractors were painted red-grey to make them look more modern.

The hood side emblems would be like on this brochure

So this tractor was represented as a later model? Still would like to get an answer on the right hydraulic oil to add. Thanks again.

You are correct. The transmission, rear end and hydraulic system all have the same oil reservoir. The original oil was 80-90 weight hydraulic and transmission oil.

Yes, somebody made it look like a later model MF35, but if it was wearing its original colors it would be worth more because you hardly ever see the green and gray TO35"s. The hydraulic oil was originally 80w90 mineral oil. You can get it at Napa in 5 gallon buckets or you can go to TSC and get Ford tractor mineral oil in 2 gallon jugs. It"s the same stuff.
