285 steering motor

Our 285 is having some issues with steering. The steering motor is leaking up the shaft, and I think the pump may be going out again also. (been replaced 2x) How hard are the motors to tear apart and rebuild, or can they be, or where (other than AGCO) can they be had?

I thought someone posted a link a while back but I've been unsucessful in finding it.

After starting it for the 1st time this year, the steering is good for 5-10 seconds, then sounds like the pump is starving. Dad said he checked the fluid level and it's near the top.

The pump can be had for around $330-350, but I'm gonna do some diagnostics first before pulling everything apart. I guess it's a good thing we're not gonna be out in the fields for another month yet...

I have a 245 do not know if a 285 is the same. I have replaced the top seal.Remove the steering wheel and replace seal. The seal had good instructions with it. Few years later i replaced the body seal , bigger job had to remove motor to replace. However think u need to check pump for pressure first my unit was just leaking , steering fine both times.david

It's got 2 things going on with the steering. The leak has been going on for a good year or so. The lack of power steering is new.

Like I said, I gotta do some checking before I do anything. Pull the reservoir off after draining, etc... Planning to try doing some work on it tomorrow.

The pump was replaced 2x by the dealer, and honestly I'm not impressed. The first pump lasted 25 years or so, the second 5 and the one on it now is maybe 5 years old. I don't think they ever did anything to flush out the old oil with metal shavings in it. I've had the reservoir off before and there were shavings. They also mixed oils. One time they filled it with perma tran which is what we run, and the last time they put in ATF. Made a nice muddy looking oil. I drained and refilled a couple times and it's been better, but it's always been loosing some oil to the engine too.

After pulling the drain plug, just a few drops of water came out. I pulled the reservoir off and it was full of crap, I think Dad got the oil jugs mixed up and put in some dirty stuff that was destined for the barn cleaner chain by mistake. I filled it up after cleaning it out, and the steering is back like before.

Still needs some attention, but it won't hurt quite as bad now. Can also be put off a little longer now too.
